The effect of habitat reduction by roads on space use and movement patterns of an endangered species, the Cabrera vole Microtus cabrerae

Roads are among the most widespread signs of man’s presence around globe. From simple low traffic trails to wide and highly used highways, roads have a array effects on wildlife. In present study, we tested how habitat reduction by may affect space use movement patterns Cabrera vole ( Microtus cabrerae ), near-threatened Iberian endemism, often living road verges. A total 16 voles were successfully radio-tracked in two patches with different size proximity roads. Results showed that individuals from smaller patch (Verge patch) had less complex home-ranges than those larger (Meadow patch). Movement significantly influenced day period but only Verge patch. There was evidence barrier effect both patches, being this much more noticeable verge population. Overall, study shows near be affected degree imposed these infrastructures. This suggests species at fine-scale should accounted for planning, even benefit habitats as refuges.
